Nintendo will amaze us with more game modes. It has happened before: we've got those beautiful Event Matches, Trophies, and the Adventure Mode in SSBM. We are now thinking about new characters, items, Pokémon, and stages, and that will surely happen as we've seen in the updates to the official site. But we should see beyond what we do have now. I can imagine the following:
1. A gallery mode with pictures from classic Nintendo scenes, like Mario spinning Bowser around in Super Mario 64, Chunky Kong knocking out K. Rool in Donkey Kong 64, Young Link drawing the Sword of Time from the Pedastal of Time, Kirby riding Coo through a stage in Kirby's Dream Land 2, etc. Basically, these pictures would be like trophies about moments and not just about characters/items/stages. They could be purchased with coins, too.
2. A Single-player/Multiplayer Quiz Mode (like in Pokémon Stadium 2) about Nintendo's history.
3. A board game (a la Mario Party).
4. With or without the board game, a mini-game mode would be fun, too. These mini-games could consist of events in which the players have to attack their opponents with SSBB moves, reach some item in a stage, destroy a sandbag before the others, or some other secondary activity like the Coin battle mode in SSBM.

The Board Game I'd have to lean against. It takes away from the Smash spirit. Minigames would be pretty funny, but there couldn't be that many ways you could make a Smash Minigame. Quiz mode isn't in the spirit either, though I see where you're coming from there. I really like the idea of the event gallery.

I don't like any of them except the photo gallery. I love that. But I think Nintendo can do better than that.
