In Paper Mario TTYD, all the battle took place on a theater stage, as you can see on the pics above. Since it looks like a suitable stage for a fight, I think it deserves a submission.
This stage is located on the stage (don't get confused, though this phrase is a bit puzzling , I admit ) of the Paper Theater. The players are standing in the front of the stage, close to the audience. The stage is long and flat, and it's thus a great place to fight on. No pits here, but you can KO your opponents on the sides of the screen.
There are many, many features and cameos in this stage. Sometimes, the large red curtains will close, hiding the fight for a few seconds. This makes the battle a bit more challenging, but also much more entertaining. When the curtains open again, they will reveal a new background. There are lots of different backgrounds, such as those you can see on the pictures: plain, town, castle, palace, forest, train, boat, factory...
When a foe is KOed, some devices in the front of the stage will puff big blasts of smoke (like in some real-life concerts, when the singer appears on the stage for instance). Spotlights sometimes gives some light to the leader of the match and follow him for a while. Rarely, some parts of the background might fall and crash onto the stage, damaging the players.
Paper-made platforms often appear from the wings and float somewhere above the battlefield. It is possible to use these as non-solid platforms. Since they can stop pretty much anywhere, there can be many different layouts.
Like in PM:TTYD, the audience plays a important role. The spectators (enemies and characters from the Mario series)come in and out, sitting on empty seats. When a character misses several hits, or when nothing happens for while, many spectators may leave the theater; on the contrary, more and more audience will come if there is much action on the stage. Rarely, the spectators will toss items onto the stage. BTW, when a character performs his Extreme, the audience will rush out of the room, screaming. (All this happened in PM2).
